Murrayville CC Kitchen Garden Grant

One of community group Slow Food Mildura’s principal activities is fundraising to support school kitchen gardens in the Sunraysia and Northern Mallee region. This year the group received a record number of applications for its annual round of school garden grants.

Slow Food was pleased to provide funds for six schools across the region including Murrayville Community College, Nangiloc Primary School, Irymple South Primary School, Mildura Specialist School, Red Cliffs East Primary School and Wentworth Public School.

The first grant of $1000 went to Murrayville CC, who have built up a wonderful program that integrates garden, kitchen and curriculum in an exemplary program they are deservedly proud of.

The school has a 30 year gardening tradition and has two staff qualified by the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. Over the years they have experimented with many types of garden including permaculture, hydroponics, mandalas and vertical gardens, and have been the recipient of several State School gardening awards.

Recently, the school refurbished an igloo greenhouse to enable them to raise their own seedlings. Grant funds will be used to fit out the greenhouse with propagation tables, seed-raising benches and a fixed garden bed to enable students to raise plants from both seed and cuttings.

Slow Food members will attend Murrayville CC on Friday October 21 2016 to meet with students and staff, present them with a hard-earned cheque, and celebrate their achievements.
